Stain & Spot Removal
By definition, a spot is anything that is spilled, tracked or added that adds substance or texture. A stain is anything that is spilled, tracked or added that adds or deletes colour through a chemical process. Removing spots and stains can be simple or painstaking depending upon the spot and how long it has been on the carpet. Listed below are general spot removal procedures to clean carpets.
Step 1: Remove as much of the foreign material as possible by blotting with a clean white paper towel or scraping with a dull knife. Apply rubbing alcohol or a dry cleaning solvent to a clean white cloth, white paper towel or cotton ball. If the carpet stain is deep into the pile use a blotting motion until the spot is removed or no colour is transferred to the cloth. Do not allow the cleaning solvent to penetrate into the carpet backing, as this will destroy the latex bond. If the stain is on the carpet surface only, rub in one direction at a time. Never use a circular motion to remove a stain as this may destroy the carpet texture. Stop if spot is removed from carpet. If not, go to step 3.
Step 2: Blot up as much of the spill as is possible. A wet/dry vacuum is useful if a large amount of liquid is spilled. If the spot has dried, saturate the tufts in the affected area with tap water (do not over wet). Allow to remain for about 1 minute then blot the carpet. Continue until the spot is completely removed until dry. Apply a layer of dry clean paper towel and brick. If the stain is not completely removed go to step 3.
Step 3: Remove as much of the foreign material as possible by blotting with a clean white paper towel or scraping with a dull knife. Apply a small amount of detergent (mix 1/4 teaspoon Non Bleach Tide powdered laundry detergent with 1 litre of water) to the spot. Use a blotting motion to work the detergent into the affected area. If the stain is being removed, continue applying detergent and blotting until the spot is removed. Rinse carpet area with tap water; apply pad of paper towels and brick and allow to dry. If there is still some stain and blotting is not removing it, moisten the stained area with 3% hydrogen peroxide. Let stand 1 hour. Blot and repeat until the carpet is stain free. Apply a layer of clean paper towels and weigh down with a brick.
